what i was forced to watch this week season 2 FINALE: air

Yep, this is it. I’ve finally watched every single anime that we had burned onto CDs/DVDs that I hadn’t already seen before. I’ll have the complete list at the end of the post. But first, Air.

i won't lie. i totally thought the stegosaurus was a taco at first

Air was a little bit frustrating. Of the three Key visual novels that Kyoto Animation has adapted, I found the main story in this one with the characters and their past lives and generational curses to be the most interesting. At the same time however, I couldn’t enjoy it as much as I would have liked due to the fairly clumsy way of adapting the story.

Partially, this was from what was left out compared to what was left in. I was able to figure out/assume that Misuzu broke the curse at the end, but I never had any idea what was needed for that to happen. The transitions didn’t particularly help here either, with the constant jumping backwards and forwards in time. That was what confused me at first with the whole Yukito-as-the-crow thing; with all the restarting the timeline and going back to where they left off, it took a while for me to realize that this wasn’t taking place like before he showed up for the first time, or that he didn’t show up like multiple times or anything.

That all said, I can never really decide how exactly visual novels should be adapted. I kind of wish that it were around 1995 again and they could release them as short OVA series so that all of the storylines could be self-contained.

Would I watch it even if I weren’t forced? Ehhhh, not totally sure. I did watch the Toei movie way back in the day, although I wasn’t a huge fan of that one (as opposed to how I thought that their Clannad one was fairly well done).

There was some poo since I did the #100 countdown. Sister Princess is still the poopiest, but the Pretty Sammy TV series, UFO Ultramaiden Princess Valkyrie, and mayyyyyybe Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch or Love Get Chu could have made the bottom 10.

The top 10 on the other hand would have gotten practically completely rewritten with the definitely inclusion of Cardcaptor Sakura, Rurouni Kenshin, Princess Tutu, Mizuiro Jidai, and the possible additions of Inukami and Digimon: Children’s War Game.

Here’s the complete list of everything that I was forced to watch this week, sorted by my ratings on MAL. Before you run off to say “WHY DID YOU ONLY GIVE MY FAVORITE SHOW A 6!!?!?!” or whatever, remember that my average rating on MAL is about 2.5 points lower than the average person’s. Thus, anything that I give a 7 or higher to is more or less recommended, and anything with a 6 or 5 I often had reservations about, but you may enjoy if you enjoy that sort of thing.

About jpmeyer

Every once and a while, I'll write something about those Japanese porno Pokemans cartoons that are STRAIGHT FROM JAPAN but AREN'T KIDS' STUFF. Just not today.

  1. adaywithoutme says:

I tend to think of AIR TV as KyoAni’s test-run for adapting Key games. Then again, while Kanon was good, Clannad had massive pacing issues, so maybe not (although After Story seemed to not suffer from the same issue).

I think AIR would’ve benefited from about a 16-episode run, unorthodox as that number of episodes may be.

I’d never realized how much the stegosaurus resembled a taco before.

  2. jpmeyer says:

It’s even more extreme in long shots because they leave out the words and make of the textures on the stegosaurus!

  3. ToastCrust says:

I remember Air, I used to be a real fan of it.

It was one of the earlier shows that I’d end up seeing via fansub.

  4. omo says:

I like it. It’s very enjoyable if you can ignore its flaws (lol I guess you be good at this).

The OAV episodes also helps to paint that back image.

  5. Sorrow-kun says:

What adaywithoutme said. The show needed more episodes. It’s still one of the best animated series KyoAni has made, IMO, even after all these years (and, no, I haven’t seen the Haruhi movie yet).

Congrats on a great season of WIWFTWTW. It’s the thing that I look forward to reading most on this blog. Looking forward to seeing what’s coming next.

  6. bluemist says:

Yes this would have benefited given more episodes. It is still the best-looking series of KyoAni. I held it to the highest level watching it back in 2005, when visual novel adaptations were still few and rare, and when HD anime production is in its early stages.

For me it’s because of Air the industry got pushed forward (or backward if you see eroge adaptations and moe as modern anime killers)

  7. Marmoset says:

“The top 10 on the other hand would have gotten practically completely rewritten with the definitely inclusion…”

Now that’s some intriguing grammar. Admittedly I had to look up the correct spelling of intriguing.

  9. Vera says:

Oh GOD! Did Air frustrate me to no end!
I watched it mainly due to the pretty art, but by the end I was soooo frustrated. And why did you assume that Misuzu broke the curse? I mean, I thought that in the end the message was that she’s not going to give up and keep trying… despite the hopeless situation.

I haven’t watched the movie, but when I read that it only included Misuzu’s story I didn’t even want to. I enjoyed the other girls’ stories much more😛
