this is why you hated new york anime festival

Much of the responses I’ve heard about New York Anime Festival, both online and in person, have been quite negative. The general consensus is that it’s being marketed as a kind of separate con, but it’s more like a daycare center for unruly anime fans. So let’s think for a minute? What’s the point of going to a con? I read Douglas Wolk’s new Kindle ebook about San Diego Comic Con, Comic-Con Strikes Again! yesterday. In one chapter, Wolk breaks down the various reasons behind going to SDCC: interaction with pros, procuring goods, gaining new information, and interacting with fellow fans. These also more or less apply to New York Comic Con. They don’t really apply to NYAF, because they don’t really apply to anime cons in general.

RIP New York Anime Festival.

Yes I am bitter than my otome game panel got rejected from new york anime festival for the 2nd year in a row. So now I’m gonna use my dead ANIME blog to rant about it! \( ^o^)/

I went to NYAF 2007, 2008 and 2009. Those were NYAF’s golden years. It was the time where they let anyone, including nice boat scammers get into the con. Sure that was a downside, but the upside was that there was a variety of panels. There were your usual set of anime panels but there were also lots of fan panels about things that may not be a specific anime or genre. In 2008 I was able to do an anime blogging panel, in 2009 I was able to do an MMO game panel. I had my hopes up high for NYAF because it was the only con that I felt like I could get a chance of doing random panels, and still get accepted. Since it’s in NYC you’d still get a fairly decent group of people attending the panel and for my MMO game panel I had a full room. A lot of people participated and asked questions so it was a lot of fun.

2010 – Vocaloid panel gets rejected. Okay fine, Crypton came that year, I get the picture.

2011 – Otome game panel gets rejected. Why?

Oh yes because my panel isn’t Naruto, Fairy Tail, Hetalia, Homestuck or whatever other internet meme that’s hot right now. I don’t even know what the fuck Homestuck is. ( ´_ゝ`) Looking at last year’s panel listing most “anime” panels were either official, or a screening or internet meme. Why? Because REED EXPO decided to be a bunch of cheap assholes and combine New York Comic Con with New York Anime Festival. Yes really smart. Because some guy who’s into Spiderman is gonna go be best friends with the fat girl over there drooling over America & England buttsecksing. Despite multiple complaints that a lot of anime fans were harrassed by the retards from the comic side, NYAF just said “LOL stfu nobody cares about anime fans in NYC” and combined it again for 2011.

Combining of course creates an overcrowded building, and in my case, cuts the chance for non generic panels to appear at the con. They told me to reapply again for 2012? Lol surely you must be kidding! Maybe I’ll reapply when you stop combining NYAF and NYCC. Oh wait you don’t give a shit about NYAF anymore. It’s now some kind of parasite to you, attached to the New York Comic Con because you need to fill up a section of space since you rented out the whole building. God forbid you actually give a shit about anime fans!

Well that’s a shame since this was the only con I could get to without forking over travel & hotel money. Guess my anime con days ended in 2009 and it will continue to be that way. RIP NYAF 2007-2009.

No cons for me this year I guess ┌┤´д`├┐

Just got an email from NYCC staff telling me they got so many panel submissions that my Vocaloid Panel was rejected. I don’t know if this is a mistake and they think that I had applied to the Comic Con rather than the “Anime Festival” section of the convention…but I sent an email asking to clarify if this indeed was the case. It indeed was rejected because of “no enough space” bah. For now, I’m still considering myself out, so I won’t be attending this year. Too bad I guess, I really had a lot of ideas for the Vocaloid Panel and wanted to show a few really nice clips for those who weren’t too familiar with it and the whole Nico Nico influence. Oh well I’m sure some stupid panel about yaoi and spiderman was a LOT more important amirite?

NYAF Day 2 – MMOs and B.O.

Who the hell still even owns VHS tapes?? And $4 each? Should be like $1 each!

Who the hell still even owns VHS tapes?? And $4 each? Should be like $1 each!

Alright so here’s day 2. Actually it wasn’t much of a day 2. I spent all morning playing Pangya until we met up with Omo & Co. at Terakawa Ramen for lunch. It was really crowded to the point where they didn’t even have enough glasses to give the 5 of us water. Yea never going back there again

NYAF 2009 Day 1 – AMV Contest Adventures

nyaf01Actually it wasn’t much of a day but rather a night. I only came to the con around 7:30 to catch the amv contest since I mentioned that my video made it into the contest. I missed most of the drama romance category but during the “brief replay” it looked like I missed a really good Nana amv. The action category was strobe effects that gave me seizures until there was that one video about some racing anime that looked like it came out of 1985. It was fucking awesome and got my vote. In the upbeat category everyone was squeeling at the ouran twins (enough already?) and the sailormoon crap in the magical girl amv. I voted for the magical girl amv because they had Trappiness and Nanatsuiro Drops xD Then in my category it was pretty…random. I actually think I had a chance until I got completely upstaged by that hilarious Mahoromatic amv. I woulda voted for it, but I decided to give my video a pity vote. I didn’t expect anyone to get the NicoNico meme to be honest and despite what Ntreev thinks, almost nobody plays PangyaBRNorth America.

NYAF and NYCC Gattai in 2010

narutospiderman

JP shared this on google reader but I didn’t see too many people talking about it. New York Anime Festival and New York Comic Con are gonna all happen in one day in 2010 at the Javitz Center. I mean both events are already getting fairly crowded as it is on their own but combining the two? :shock: I mean it’s technically a good idea because now all those anime people who go to NYCC can just stick to the NYAF side. On the other hand a lot of underage lolis and shotas go to NYAF – and they will have a double pass allowing them to walk into the NYCC area and see some bare naked ladies in the comic section :lol: It’s gonna be interesting. I kinda wanna go just to see if a brawl starts between some ghostbusters and code geass cosplayers xD We’ll see I guess, for now we need to get working on the panel for this year’s convention ^^;;;

“Blogger Panel”

I swear I’m not beating a dead horse!! Anyway this is actually a bootleg announcement that yes, Pangya MMO game panel is ON at this year’s NYAF in September. ;-) It’s just going to be JP & I though, Dan will probably have work and won’t be able to make it all the way down here Friday night. I don’t know if I’ll go to the con on Saturday though, but since I’m probably going to be getting a free pass I might stop by for a couple hours if anyone else is going.

Regarding comic quality, I actually attempted to use the colors within Comic Studio and that didn’t come out so hotly. I guess if I wanna do color I’ll stick to SAI and for B&W I’ll use Comic Studio.
