Otome Game to Anime Adaptations are Crap.

Hello! It’s been a while I’ve been watching a few animes this spring but for the most part I’ve been busy plowing through my otome game backlog and my focus hasn’t really been on this blog. JP’s been busy with Mass Effect (or whatever other nerd game he’s playing) so there’s not been too much need to update here. However I figured since otome game to anime trend has been catching on I’d throw in a few words.

So the first really popular otoge -> anime adaptation has really been Hakuoki. Sure we had our Angeliques and Cordas but really nobody cared until they threw some historical bishies on us. I remember watching the anime and then realizing how much crap it was after playing the game. Turning Chizuru into a dude the whole time so they can add BL intonations? Check. Making her not end up with anyone in the end to ensure there’s no biased butthurt? Check. Making all the guys look girlier than Kazuki Yone’s art? Check! Yet somehow it gained enough popularity to warrant the first English licensed PSP release. Alright Hakuoki aside let’s move on to the next thing:

Uta no Prince-sama! Maji Homo 1000%

Oh yea this was a show based on a game about a girl who wanted to compose music for her favorite idol. Oh wait that was the game silly me! The anime was about an incompetent imbecile heroine who couldn’t even PLAY THE FUCKING PIANO as she watched 6 guys BL it up with each other in HILARIOUS situations.  So why does this piss me off? Well I never expected the anime to really affect what’s in my games but LO AND BEHOLD IT HAS. It has in the form of Unko no Shit-sama DEBUT: The game where Broccoli realized they have a massive following of yaoi fangirls, so they cut down on the romance with the heroine and instead throw in 4 more guys for extra slash fodder! Needless to say, original otome game fans in Japan were not pleased. So there we go, thanks to the MajiHomo1000% anime, the original game makers jumped on the BL bandwagon and ruined the game for the rest of us. (And I’m still trying to ebay off my copy but who’s gonna buy this crap orz.)

Following suit, DEEN decided that Hakuoki milking wasn’t enough and brought us:

Hiiro no Kakera

Hiiro no Derpkera more like it? I mean I don’t get it. Not saying Hakuoki was amazing quality but it was still WATCHABLE. Hiiro just suffers from complete and utter inconsistent garbage animation throughout.

Wtf were you thinking DEEN? I’ll give them props that at least through the episodes I watched, the plot was consistent to the game and there wasn’t a shit ton of filler. Though since Hiiro is a 60 hour text dump, adding in filler would just be shooting themselves in the foot even further. Still though, it was horrid enough that I dropped it around episode 5 or 6 because I couldn’t deal with it. I’m not asking them to animate Kazuki Yone’s art but I’m asking them to at least keep a consistent art quality for fuck’s sake. This is reminding me of Kamichama Karin. So now with the summer season ahead of us we have

1. Hakuoki Remeiroku (which is bound to be a BL fest based on my own experience with the game)

2. Arcana Famiglia:

Arcana doesn’t really have BL potential (except maybe something between Liberta & Dante’s daddy issues) but the game’s got its own set of issues. We got milfs, heroines in mini skirt who like to KICK HIGH, guidos, incest, and pedobears. Hmm yea I’m sure the animation quality by JC Staff will be fine but I bet they’ll have no problem emphasizing on Miss Ara Tits Desuwa milf mother who btw is conveniently voiced by Inoue Kikuko while the dad is voiced by Gendo Ikari . If you’re curious and don’t mind spoilers I reviewed the game earlier this year.

So needless to say my expectations for otome game -> anime adaptations are low. We’ve only gotten crap up to now and it doesn’t seem to be going in a positive direction. As long as DEEN keeps licensing stuff, it’s gonna be crap and as long as only mainstreamy stuff gets picked up all the less popular games with better stories will always be left in the dark. Though I guess in the end companies pick up whatever they can cater to their biggest buying audience and I suppose to them that just happens to be fujoshi.
