This would have been a better show.
So after watching 4 episodes of OreImo, I’ve come to the conclusion that Kirino is a stupid fucking bitch. That’s right I’m watching this show because I like watching anime relating to otaku crap (I should go watch that eroge god anime now right?) but I’m getting quite sick of her bitchy antics. I don’t watch this show because I want to see her brother land on top of her and grab her titties. I watch it because Kuroneko is fucking awesome, Kyosuke is moe (actually more like Nakamura Yuuichi’s voice is moe) and Saori is win de gozaru.
Let’s go back to the beginning. You got this 14 year old that somehow managed to collect a mass of eroge yet she has no fucking idea that internet otaku communities existed and she’s never been to Akihabara. How the fuck did she buy all those eroge without a credit card to prove that she is 18? And never been to Akihabara? If she’s only 14 and she collected all those games this had to have taken at least a year or two. Do 12 year olds like to play incest loli games now? And where did she even learn that these games existed in the first place, especially seeing how she is oblivious to the fact that people on the internet know about this stuff?
What else bothers me is Kyosuke. The poor guy is a NORMAL GUY. He thinks his sisters hobby is fucking weird but he’s like “whatever do what you want, I care about you as a brother etc.” Then this stupid cunt decides to beat him, kick him, force him to play poorly created loli eroge and then make him watch over her as she tries to make otaku friends?
I love KuroNeko telling Kirino to stfu and how she loves all this shit targeted towards pedos. I even like Kirino’s friend, the nice girl who’s like “I know you didn’t land on your sister like that on purpose. I know you’re a good brother.” WHAT A SWEET GIRL. Can we have some scenes with her instead of the bitchy imouto for once?
I don’t mind incest if it’s done in some satirical/fantastical fashion. For example in MAZE, bro/sis incest, that leads to them becoming 1 and so the sister comes out in the day, while the perv bro comes out at night. It’s all fun and games in some fantasy universe. Then you have stuff like Yosuga no Sora where obviously the obsessive yandere sister is like the stock character type, there’s no realism about it. But what bothers me about OreImo is that they try to make it all realistic like “oh, ew my brother is so KIMO” and “I’m also a fashion model” and “perfect straight A student”…yet she somehow has time to complete all those fking eroge? Yea okay. I think I liked this show better when it was called “Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu”.

JP’s Take: Let’s take an anime that “panders” to otaku, like say, K-ON. How does K-ON pander to otaku? Well, it has “cute” girls doing “cute” things like eat cake, fall on their tushies, and in general, act in ways that most otaku would generally classify as moe. Or, we could take something like the average SHAFT show, which panders to otaku by being really esoteric and not making any kind of sense to anyone that isn’t a hardcore otaku. Or hell, you can just take cliched harem fanservice comedy #9001 that we see every season and say that it panders to otaku by elevating (heavily-censored) nudidity (that will go away once they buy the $80 Blu-Rays) over things like story or characterization.
But at the same time, those shows are what they are. Shy childhood friend that blushes a lot, oversexed teacher who humps inanimate objects, and dull main male lead are stock characters. There doesn’t need to be some kind of psychological explanation as to why said teacher is perpetually in heat, nor do we need to delve into the dull male lead’s history to find out why he is so dull. Listing last week’s minor unfunny 2ch memes on a chalkboard doesn’t derail this week’s episode of Zetsubou Sensei. And well, the fact that it just-so-happens that someone just-so-happens to walk in on every female character while they are changing is the point of completely unoriginal harem comedy. They don’t need any setup or explanation. They can just exist.
But with Oreimo, what’s so frustrating is that there are all these contrivances piled up onto this increasingly teetering plot, but for what payoff? A super duper fantasy? The payoff is the ability to be a normal guy (#1) who has a little sister (#2) who loves incest-themed (#3) eroge (#4) and is a model (#5) in order to afford them, along with a family that accepts this (#6) and a combination of friends, both normal and otaku (#7) so that one can be still be socially acceptable (#8). It’s kind of obvious how much of a blatantly absurd fantasy this is when the whole thing doesn’t even make sense. The title isn’t lying; his sister truly can’t be this cute.
There’s a limit to the number of conceits that I can accept with a story and still give it the benefit of the doubt. Usually it’s one, but sometimes I’ll allow two. Aliens crash land in the main character’s backyard. Fine. I don’t need tons of explanation as to how their navigation system failed and whatnot. I’ll just accept that at face value. Similarly, if the premise behind the show was that “my little sister secretly likes otaku stuff”, that would be one thing, but as more and more gets piled on with the payoff being nothing more than a scene of getting to go on a pseudo-date with kawaii desu wota imouto-chan, or getting to trip and fall on her with such force that all of her clothes practically get ripped off my attention wears thin. After all, these are the sort of things that most anime will simply provide without any more setup than “But you promised you’d go shopping with me this Sunday, oniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-chan!”
First noticed this in the feed reader and thought she looked like poop until I realised the joke, though I guess it is something you were trying to imply anyway www
While Kirino herself is a bitch as you say, the saving grace is Kuroneko and that alone makes the whole series worthwhile and better than the likes of Nogizaka will ever be.
Well I do admit Nogizaka was an epic failure in Season 2 (which is to say it’s basically like this show now). I like kuroneko a lot. I usually hate the quiet characters but she’s definitely got some spunk to her which makes her likeable to me.
If the girl isn’t bitchy, the story wouldn’t go very far on its own. It’s kind of like Nogizaka because she and Yuuto are so already OTP and ready to call it a day, the story ended up adding all this extra external crap that just makes the show a pain to watch. By making Kirino the way she is, they have all this tsundere tension to drive the relationship/story. I guess at least they’re nice enough to have all these cool side characters.
As for JP, I think it’s gotten meta enough for me that the conceits themselves are what I’m watching it for. Like the trip-and-strip scene, because they need to do it just because it happens in eroge.
At this point, I feel like “meta” in anime just gets used as an excuse for “lazy”.
Well, considering you enjoyed that “raw sewage taste” PSG animu, just by that fact alone you lost any credibility you had (if any), and maybe its you who should STFU and be slapped upside the head ? Ever thought about it ?
I think OreImou is a great show so far, but I agree that Kirino is kind of mean to her brother who’s done so much for her without asking anything in return. He’s done a number of kindnesses for her in these four episodes, while the only nice thing she’s done is thank him (not very enthusiastically) in episode 3. Perhaps she’s just really immature for her age? I want to like her…so hopefully she’ll show some redeeming qualities as the series progresses.
It’s only 13 episodes or something right? I’m sure she’ll have her “dere” moments but she’ll probably be a bitch to the end. I think I would have liked it more if she was the token childhood friend or “tsundere neighbor next door” or something other than his sister
I find it ridiculously hilarious stereotyping the typical otakuness. Poor oniichan has to always save his imouto.
The summary, she is a closet oniicon. What do you expect from someone who actually plays… Sister Princest. It’s a reversal of roles. She is trying to groom onii-chan to be a siscon instead of the otherway around. ie, the dreams of otaku.
Tsun-tsun and dere dere.
Digi> That’s what makes me rage. He’s such a good bro and she’s turning him into a pedo siscon freaking biatch
I agree to an extent that it was clearly written in because it thinks it can get away with it on the grounds that it is a show about conceits. Don’t say lazy, call it crazy.
Hinano> There is a manga called Onii-chan Control where the older brother, fearing his own sister-complex, moves away to a dorm to get away and resist temptation. Cue a few years later, imouto shows up at his door to move in. The twist of the story? She’s a freaking psycho yandere bro-con who sets up those “events” and “accidents” (walk-in, bentos) on purpose, knowing he is a sis-con, and is trying to get him to be completely in love with him. It takes brother complex to a whole new level…
About this series, it really is stretching my suspension of disbelief, and I’m able to extend my suspension of disbelief pretty high. I enjoy FREAKIN To-Love-Ru. That’s pretty high.
But this anime? Ugh, the sister pisses me off, and pushes my tolerance level. Your brother isn’t the one forcing you to play eroge games. The poor brother…honestly, can you imagine if you said that to your parents? “I play imouto games on my sister’s laptop that are about doing my sister…” I don’t even want to think about it…thank god for the other characters. They are really the only reason I’m watching this show…
By the way…does anyone feel Comiket is getting a little overdone? It shouldn’t, should it?
The show is great because UNLIKE Nogizaka Haruka (which was a total failure in my book) it does NOT pander to siscons. Hellooo?
Kirino is getting on everyone’s nerves because she is NOT depicted as a cute closet otaku. In the early volumes she’s an ungrateful, loudmouthed, ill-tempered and disrespectful brat. This is done BY DESIGN, not because of script failure. And it gives the show an extra edge of credibility that a brother who had an annoying little sister in the past too can appreciate.
If you guys don’t have the stomach to tolerate Kirino, then that’s perfectly fine. But then do it for the right reason. Not by claiming the show to be doing something it most decidedly does NOT do.
Fear is the path to the lolicon side… Wait… that’s the Dark Side. EROGE is the path to the lolicon side.
This show exemplifies the secret desires of the otaku. People say the light novels don’t end up the siscon route. Anyway, I’m seeing this through for the blatant stereotypings. ^^;
Seriously, the fact that this show exists frightens me as to the state of Japan. How can a sister get infatuated with eroge clearly made to pander to the male population mystifies me… unless the sister has a onii-complex and seeks to win approval of her brother’s love. (the family type, not the romance type)
Besides, Kyosuke’s denser than lead. His GF clearly wants to bed him and he can’t see that.
Gin> See that’s the kind of siscon that siscon should be. Blatant, yandere, freaky and no trying to beat around the bush. I heard of that manga but I didn’t read it but I’d definitely say it’s probably a lot better than this. Here she acts like her brother is “so kimo” but then she tells him to play eroge where you do your sister…right…
Mentar> I am confused on what you’re trying to tell me. We have to like Kirino because she’s a bitch and we can’t hate her because she’s a bitch? That makes no sense to me
I didn’t read the novels, I am basing my opinion solely on the anime.
Digi> I was discussing this with a friend on google talk earlier, and she basically summed it up as “its like having a waifu the lazy way”
Do you mean Kyosuke’s childhood friend? Yea I feel bad for her. XD But she’s also a bit too stereotypical and I’d even prefer him to end up with kirino’s friend or kuroneko
Ochinchin control
Also, how is this not siscon?

OreImo Episode 04: Here We Go…or No? «
Tweets that mention Your sister needs to STFU before I slap her upside the head. « 見ないで! ひとり言 -- Topsy.com
I’m so confused, is there or isn’t there sibcon in the novels and/or manga?
I don’t really care which way it goes, but I think I’d rather see Kyousuke with Ayase or Manami. Poor Manami though, she’s so not in the picture and we all know it.
Similarly, there’s “Onii-chan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki Jyanai Dakara Ne”, which is about average (well, more pathetic than average) perv man. And there forms around him various girls who vye for his sexual lust by forcing him into eroge situations, because they get off of seeing him looking at them and wagging his tail.
More or less. There’s the little sister (who’s quite disappointed when she realizes they aren’t blood related–she’s been robbed of her ultimate, taboo desire) who’s basically spent her whole life inserting siscon porn in her brother’s stash, destroying any porn that isn’t siscon related, etc.
There’s the childhood friend who moved away, who essentially just tries to rape him or tricks him into raping her all the time.
The two constantly stalk and spy on all his habits, and there’s a lot of counter-intrigue between them over his lust.
Theeeeen there appears this girl who might not be a girl who’s very tall and forces him to buy and read her BL manga while raising him to be a proper “pet”.
o 3o
A lot more fun than Oreimo, at least for me.
Oh -inserted deity of choice-.
Now I’m thinking of the onee-chan/otouto variation. And even more disturbingly… the onii/otouto variation.
Brrr….
Toast> LOL well in my eyes, non blood related stuff is okay but either way when its like blatantly obvious siscon I don’t mind but here they’re acting like its not siscon when it clearly is. That in a sense is what busgs me the most.
Digi> In my otome games any brother routes have all been non blood related – except for love revo which was like WTF in my eyes X_X thankfully it wasnt R-18
naza> Apparently the novel is headed the siscon route.
Yeah, most overtly siscon things–worse if they’re blood related–kind of are too icky for me to watch, since it’s just a fetish I can’t actually comprehend (since I actually have a couple of those things). I was barely fine with the first 3 ep since it was pretty tame as far as fanservice went (that, and Kyousuke generally showed very little reaction when faced with Kirino’s body). Versus say, KissXSis where I just couldn’t watch even if they weren’t related lol.
But yeah, even if it’s kinda smutty I really like Onii-chanKoto (which apparently will be getting an anime!) since it’s essentially a harem comedy, except told from the view of the girls, and the fanservice moments only happen by careful deliberation on the girls’ parts towards the goal of just utterly and completely destroying the man’s dignity, pretty much.
wow, i think u guys r taking this too seriously lol. A normal person won’t even rant on this shit and instead drop it or go with it without talking shit. Like you commentators. The Blogger has the right to say whatever the fuck he wants. This is their domain after all so fuck off karry.
“i don’t give a shit if you talk shit about me because your a piece of shit”
Kirino
There’s appaerntly one novel where there’s no Kirino in the picture and Kuroneko starts going to school w/ Kyouske.
Then the rails come off and siscon happens.
I think the eroge god anime is a lot better than Oreimo, but the 2nd girl (ep 2+3 I think) kinda sucks. The other target girls are a lot better though.
We should just stop thinking that this anime is “realistic”. The realism ended back in episode 3, or maybe earlier, when it dealt about Genshikenish otaku issues. I have not read spoilers of the future stories, but I can fully expect otaku pandering by virtue of harem stories featuring the huge female cast while our OTP girl Kirino slowly goes dere dere like the usual jealous imouto chara we are all familiar about.
come to think of it, maybe kirino and kyosuke are not blood related. >_>
I asked my boyfriend about how she bought her ergoe. We came to conclusion we had no idea.
I don’t know why people keep thinking it’s realistic. It’s your typical harem story with a little more depth. When you try to view it as realistic, there are just so many things that don’t make sense. Such as the sister being a successful model, and having all the money to spend on games. Seriously, that stuff is expensive? There’s no way she makes that MUCH. And you pointed out a few more plotholes. There are just…too many.
@XIX …are you new to bloggers? We love to rant. It’s more fun then anything else.
It’s apparently a big debate amongst the light novel fans, lol
Whether they’re blood related or not.
JP: I think the pile of contrivances isn’t as silly as you think. It seems to me that imouto characters are largely supposed to be extraordinary in all categories purely because it feeds the idea that “oh, even though they can cook/do housework/get great grades/be cute/do the taxes/fight crime at night, he is still a figure she looks up to/depends on, even though he’s basically a failure as a human being in comparison.” If you compare Kirino to like, Mikan from Toraburu (since someone mentioned it earlier, and because this is essentially the character type being parodied in the opening scene), there’s definitely a different method being taken but the end result is pretty much the same.
(ON THAT NOTE DOES THAT MAKE SABER AN IMOUTO BECAUSE SABER CLASS IS EXTRAORDINARY IN ALL CATEGORIES TOO)
Actually, if we really want to think about “realism” (reeeeally?) Mikan and her imouto equivalents are probably less “realistic” because they do all the housework and cooking and probably do the taxes too, instead of just being a model.
Hey guys, are we all watching the same “My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute” anime? « Black and Blue Socks
Toast> Wow really? has there been any evidence that supports that she may NOT be blood related? I mean I realize she looks nothing like anyone in her family but I thought that was just some character design flaw. I’d completely change my view if we found out she was some alien dropped off on their doorstep as a baby
OreImo is srsbzns « ⑨ centimetres per second
^Best plot twist ever.
Btw, when I made my blog post, you weren’t one of the people I was thinking of in the first paragraph. You’re post and points were different…and more valid criticism of the series, I thought. Just fyi.
As far as I know, nothing really definitive (probably why it’s a big argument lol).
I’m not very familiar, since Oreimo’s not really my thing, but I think a point that’s brought up was Saori’s “You two look nothing alike!”
I’m sure there’s more stuff, but I only skimmed the brief tweets that mentioned that stuff lol You’d have to research more for any clear answer.
But yes, such a revelation would change the tone of the series a lot.
“(I should go watch that eroge god anime now right?)”
Yes. Yes, you most certainly should. It’s nowhere near as edgy as OreImo (at least over the course of what will be adapted in the foreseeable future), but the characters are more interesting (even the ones who are there more or less for the express purpose of being a galge stereotype), the humor is much better, and what plot contrivances there are are intentionally part of the humor (as opposed to just being laughable), at least for the most part. And it just keeps getting better.
OreImo is starting to piss me off – A rant. | Ambivalence , or is it ambiguity?
It’s the “little more depth” part that bugs me about Oreimo. If they never bothered with trying to give it that “little more depth”, I would probably never start thinking about this stuff. There would just be this whole lot of emptiness where if I realllllllllly needed to, I could use my head to fill in whatever reasons would make the whole thing make sense to me. But the show wants to fill in all that stuff for me, and well, it doesn’t do a very good job of it.
Live action version of oreimo! exceeding the boundaries of 2d.
Screw Onii-chan control as that is even worse than this for sis-con!
It just I can’t see that strict father leaving that family in one piece if this manga goes sis-con, blood related or not. He laid the smack down on both children just for owning R-18 items. Oh and she dyes her hair brown as it’s naturally black like her family members. That’s one less obstacle down the sis-con route and that’s a bad thing.
Comparison in OreImo: Following Genshiken’s Principles « Rainbowsphere
Oh, come on, this show is supposed to be like, low magic fantasy. Like Sex and The City, ya know? Ya just accept silly premise (a journalist who can afford prada, 4 single women who can actually afford to live in nice condos, etc’) and then ya can have fun without making wrinkles in your brain. Lighten up!
I have to adress a few of the plot holes tho:
1) I’m a girl and I played some pretty hard core eroge 2)since I was 13. Trust me, it doesn’t take very long to collect quite a few, and not every place care if you’re 18 yet, just like buying smokes on the street, heh. 3)I dunno how much this games cost, but from my expression, second hand ones are pretty cheap, 4) I used to be a straight A student without doing any homework in junior high – just wait till she gets to high school and 5)I have otaku friends as well a normal ones who politely pretend the can;t hear me when I rant about creepy sex fetishes.
So even tho this anime is clearly a kinda wish fulfillment fantasy of the mary-sue-fanfic variety, it’s not a bad one, and I think if ya don’t dwell about it, one can really enjoy it. It’s not Genshiken (if only *sigh*), but it’s fun.
@JP That’s a really good point. I don’t think I would have realized all the plot holes if it hadn’t made me start thinking.
Also, on a side note, the more I look at this picture, the more I love it. I sound like a suck-up, but everytime I look at it, I just happen to find something else I like…
I think the closest thing I’ve seen as Genshiken for girls is that Kuragehime show.
But I think it might only be superficially so, and ultimately end up hitting all of those ultra standard-issue josei issues and nothing much beyond that.
The Romance of the Three Kingdoms otaku is pretty entertaining though.
I already got the romance of the 3 kingdoms otome style out of my system

Women can do what you say in real life! it was fantasy in the 19th century not the 21st. After reading your somewhat ‘sex’ist post I can only point your young self towards this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Union_of_Women%27s_Suffrage_Societies
Oh and shenanigans to moaning about taking it too seriously then using your own experiences to address plot holes. It’s meant to be a realistic setting hence it’s charm, but as alluded already, it’s degraded/ing into a pandered fetistfest.
Uh, it’s sexist to state that a journalist probably shouldn’t be able to afford prada?
@dick jones
^This. Whoever thinks journalists can afford anything beside second-handed sneakers has not worked as a journalist.
Women indeed can do anything they want – except go on shopping spree on a 17 thousand dollars salary. If you don’t know that, you’re very lucky.
Darling, it’s exactly the same, because both DO NOT EXIST. Come on, do you really think New York is filled with sexy nymphos in their 40′s? That’s a fantasy, the same as this anime.
I’ve used my own experiences to demonstrate it’s not *that* out-there, unless you lived a fairly sheltered life. People who think it’s unusual for 14-years-old girls to be pervy didn’t speak to any lately.
Also, kudos for calling a 20-ish female solider sexist.
New York is full of 20somethings pretending to be the SATC characters.
Also, IIRC Conde Nast writers get lots if free swag because otherwise it is hard to dress the part in journalism.
Also, man I have no idea what is going on in this thread anymore.
Bottom line: Unless she is revealed to not be his sister because of fantastical turn of events (or she’s an alien) I will continue hating this show.
