what i was (not) forced to watch this week #9: new getter robo

Let’s get this out of the way first:

Basically, I expected it to be an shortened version of the standard super robot story, with some modern animation. It was not as burning as I had hoped/expected, although was sufficiently burning enough by the end. What did honestly surprise me was how vile and hateable the characters are. We’re talking about Ryoma and the gang going around and like tearing people apart with their bare hands. Then again, this is a Go Nagai work, so I probably should’ve assumed that it would’ve been full of warped violence.

Also, the most Psyduck-y part was that part in the middle where they end up in feudal Japan fighting Seimei. I still don’t get the whole point of that.

Among the G-related robot shows from the decade, I’d put it below Godannar, above Gravion, and probably around the same place as Gurren Lagann.

  1. Come on, you cant place it on the same level as that mediocrity Gurenn Lagann. Whatever you say it was REAL burning spirit, not a cheap Gainax fake.

Also, hairy balls of a fatso.

  2. “I don’t know that I’d consider Gravion to be G-rated. There’s a fair amount of nudity”

Gravion got nothing on Godannar in that department. I just assumed he was making a joke of all these super-robot shows starting with “G”. And indeed its some kind of a law for any decent giant robot show, it seems, G-Gundam and Giant Robo and GaoGaiGar AND Gear Senshi AND i’m sure there are a few more i cant remember at the moment.
