Aaaaaaand we’re back to the crap. Along with watching anime that I actually want to watch, I’ve been going through the worst anime on MAL hoping to find any that are either not bad but actually awesome (like Mad Bull 34) or so transcendently awful that they become almost surreal (like Garzey’s Wing.) Unfortunately, Apocalypse Zero is neither of those.
It is, however eminently hateable. One of the recent ANN Casts had a member from Media Blasters on who claimed to be the only person in the world that likes this anime, and I’m inclined to agree. More specifically, it’s the sheer ugliness of everything.
There’s a fair amount of shall we say, “moral ugliness”, but even that doesn’t compare to all the physical ugliness everywhere. Everything is hideous. Everything. This is not something like Wicked City which might be gross or weird, but still luxuriously drawn and animated. I mean, just look at those character designs! Look at those monsters! This isn’t the kind of stuff that would get someone circa 1993 to be like “WOW, CHECK OUT THIS JAPANIMATION!” (never mind that this is actually from 1996, of course). It’s the sort of thing that would get made fun of.
Also, one of the main villains in this show is a gigantic, grotesque, morbidly obese dominatrix that bites mens’ faces off and then uses the skin from their faces to cover up her enormous nipples.
Well, look at it this way: you can watch terrible, terrible anime from the 90′s, or you can watch/”read” Twilight. Doesn’t this anime looks much more appealing now? So does a guillotine, really.
God, I hate Twilight (the third movie is going strong this days. Mucho fun!)
Anyway, I always wondered what was the appeal of this pile of cow dung supposed to be. Like, what’s the selling point? It’s all over the place, like someone had a bad animated diarrhea. Weird.
Also, what a shocker, it is one of the few anime that was dubbed in Israel. Israel’s cable companies assume that anything cartoon-ish coming from Japan is the next Pokemon (ah,those were the days!). Can you believe someone actually PAYED to broadcast this abomination?

Some loon made a music video from this to Marilyn Manson’s “the Beautiful People” and submitted it to an early convention AMV contest. It seriously traumatized the staff when we were going through the submissions, and we were *grateful* when it also violated technical submission requirements sufficiently to keep it out of the contest. I mean, I’ve had nightmares about that video, and I’ve never even seen the show.
It wasn’t the guy without a face, btw – it was his girlfriend’s unmentionable fate that really freaked me out. Truly horrible.
