what i was forced to watch this week #71: school rumble s2

I kind of trudged through the first season of School Rumble, so I wasn’t particularly paying attention when the second season came out. It didn’t help that it came out in Spring 2006, when there were more watchable shows that season than many seasons these days have shows. I mean, School Rumble was kind of funny, especially in the really absurd bits, but perhaps not funny enough.

Season 2 dropped down a little bit for me, but not exactly for the reason that you’ll probably expect. I don’t think that the show ever really got any less funny, but rather the mini-story arcs (like Eri and the matchmaker) made me kind of disappointed that it never aspires for anything more. I can laugh at random fat guy in thong randomly doing Para Para with Tenma, but every time I see all the relationships between the characters that the show has now spent two seasons establishing (note: “establishing” rather than “developing”), I keep thinking “C’mon, do something with this now!” Or perhaps, “You’ve given me all these characters, now make me care about them.”

Would I watch it even if I weren’t forced? Close, but not quite there.

  1. “I can laugh at random fat guy in thong”

Apparently its a reference to a rather famous “comic”, that does wrestler impressions, or so i’ve heard.
Same guy is also in “Seigi no Mikata”.

  2. I cared about the characters. It got me that far. I hated how little it did with them. School Rumble (as a whole) was one of the most frustrating stories I’ve seen in anime, which says a lot. It had the potential to be one of the classic anime rom-coms. It ended up being one of the greatest disappointments.

  3. I’m in the middle of watching this one right now, and while I enjoy the humor, you’re right about the development. They keep hinting but never really go anywhere with things. I wonder if the manga is better in this respect …

  4. Yes, it was on Seigi no Mikata, the fire episode? At the end, when Makiko gets bored of the fat in thong and telks him he should do para para? xD it was funny

  5. @Senna
Ahahaha…manga…oh boy, you might likely have more people raging at that then the anime…check the Wiki or Tvtropes on more details about that.

  6. It always frustrated me how the author seemed to build up certain character relationships only to reset them straight back after a few chapters or so all the way until the end of the manga. Then it just ended with a pie fight…
