what i was forced to watch this week #70: weiss kreuz

Man, the mid-to-late 90′s. The days when one was not constantly handed yaoi on a silver platter.

Shotarape!

Shota...no wait, I'm thinking of Negima

The thing about Weiss Kreuz that stuck out to me the most, which was sort of funny at first but became kind of awkward as the show went on is the non-stop violence against women (and comparatively very little against men). I should note that the vast majority of this was not in a kind of damsel in distress sort of way that one would commonly see in a female-audience show. No, this was rather about the members of Weiss Kreuz having to kill women.

The reason it was kind of funny at first was because the show’s obvious yaoi undercurrent. The men, serving as a kind of blank slate with no real societally pre-established sexuality, were going around killing (sexual!) women that were being (sexual!) threats to the viewer. Har har. However, they just keep on killing and killing, and not just to the evil lady assassins. The one scene where Yohji chokes the one women to death was kind of disturbing, and i can’t imagine how that kind of stuff isn’t a ladybonerkiller.

While I liked the even more violent (and rapey!) Ayashi no Ceres when I was forced to watch it, I just couldn’t shake the feeling this whole time about how all the violence in this just seemed so problematic considering the audience. They went way past the line where they’re bad boys (whose tortured heart only I can heal!) into the territory where they’re legitimately dangerous.

Would I watch it even if I weren’t forced? MOAR LIEK SCHEISS KREUZ AMIRITE?!

  1. This stuff is some of my favorite crap ever. The OVA is better, though, because it has more blood =D Essentially, in the OVA, they kill each other. This isn’t a spoiler; its the first scene!

I’m kind of surprised you didn’t mention the surprise incest.

As for the violence against women… hmm. I dunno. I guess because I accept that it really isn’t good to begin with, I’m willing to overlook that? Who knows. Its been a long time since I’ve watched this.

    • At this point, I kind of expect incest in female-audience shows.

And man, the OVA. I’m like “Why is there a 14 year old girl lying in a parking lot in a pool of blood? Oh, that’s why. Random sniper. That makes perfect sense.”

  2. JP, incest has gone mainstream TV lately with KissXSis, so not only female-targeted niche shows…
and regarding ultraviolence… rule 34 rears its ugly head and boy, do you know how many chicks are into strangling them?

  3. That screenshot you have, though, makes me really reallllly want to go read some Weiss Kreuz fanfiction, though.

I love how the OVA basically makes up for the absence of blood in the TV series – if I recall correctly, characters basically got a splinter and then bled for the next ten minutes.

I think WK was on the cutting edge insofar as incest is concerned. I mean, nowadays I just expect incest in basically everything if there’s any romance involved. I don’t think this is an unfair assumption on my part, either.
