Top 5 lists are old and busted. Bottom 5 lists, now that’s the new hotness. In a nutshell, there are basically four different types of bottom 5 lists:

This is clearly The Hater. The Hater hates. What does The Hater hate? The Hater can hate all sorts of different things: popular shows, specific genres, moe, newfags, difficult shows (that they don’t get), praised shows, and so on.

Most of these shows will have come out in the last year or two, and often really aren’t necessarily that terrible. They’re the kind of shows that will be (if not already) forgotten in a few months. In other words, The Fan That Doesn’t Watch Enough Anime doesn’t really have much perspective when it comes to what’s bad.

The Guy That Watched All of CPM’s Old Catalog watches lots of truly bad anime, but these are the kind of bad anime that are so bad that they’re fun to watch. I’d take one episode of Mad Bull 34 over one episode of a decent-but-not-particularly-amazing show like I dunno, Toradora any day of the week.

Hah neat post. Haven’t seen many post about least favorite anime and this had an interesting perspective to it. I have a habit of starting way too anime and usually stay away from anime I dislike enough to put at a “bottom 5 list.” If I don’t like it, I just won’t watch it… and I’m usually the one making other people watch anime.
I don’t recognize a lot of the anime on those middle lists. Except Queen’s Blade which happened to be on late one night at an anime con in the hotel room… I’d put that one last on the anime list. XD

How could you possibly do a CPM worst list without Crystal Triangle? Hell, I bet I could come up with five USMC titles worse than anything you listed. Except maybe Mad Bull.
As for why someone might have seen them all – it was the early/mid Nineties! Hell, I *bought* Crystal Triangle. We were desperate and stupid.
It would take a lot of research to do up a good worst-five list, if only because a healthy psyche tends to mis-file and otherwise neglect rotten entertainment like bad anime. This is mine, five minutes googling version:

See? Subjective as hell. Nanako and Kaleidotard probably weren’t even all that bad, they just left a really memorable irritation in their wake. As for Kanon, any show where I start building a When They Cry-type serial-killer backstory while watching the first episode to stay awake is gonna fall on my shitlist.

Do you have to have seen the whole thing for it to go on your bottom 5 list? I mean, usually when I see that something’s bad I stop watching it. If not, how much do you have to have seen for it to go on the list? If I watched the first two minutes of Strike Witches before freaking out at how they refused to wear pants, do I get to put that on my list or not?

I didn’t really want to do a completely CPM-centered list, but yeah I remember when I would walk into a Blockbuster video in junior high and the anime section would be like, Akira, a random VHS tape of Evangelion, Harmageddon, and of course, Crystal Triangle. Those two get the nod for me over stuff like Battle Arena Toshinden or Art of Fighting.

I’d have a tough time, since I know a lot of shows I hate, I hate because they’re just terribly done sequels to series that I at least liked before (CGR2, all sequels ever for ZnT, etc).

Macross 7 is the show that Black Heaven *wanted* to be. It’s like Tenacious D in a red transforming mech: acres and acres of borderline-funny stupid rock shtick, and then a brief, perfect peak of absolute Awesome. Followed by yet more stupid rock shtick.
