what i was forced to watch this week #24: ufo princess valkyrie

UFO Ultramaiden Princess Valkyrie is pretty far down on the list. It’s bad enough that it’s a fanservice comedy that is neither funny nor enjoyably service-y. What really damns it is that it has borderline Tenshi ni Narumon-level grating voices. While nobody is singularly as bad as Noelle was, the loli versions of characters like Valkyrie or Hydra are almost unbearable. Even people that I generally like, like Rie Tanaka and Saeko Chiba, were really awful here.

The fanservice is pretty bad for two reasons. Well, one plus one. The first is that it’s almost entirely in the form of stock footage. The most frequent sources are transform sequences. There was one episode where the same sequence was used four times. When fanservice is supposed to be the main point of the show, it reflects pretty terribly on you when that’s getting fast forwarded through in each episode. Along with that, there’s tons of reused stills. Almost every episode begins with the same collection of bathhouse stills. Again, more fast forwarding through what’s supposed to be the point of the show. You can’t just show the same thing over and over again and expect the same impact. It’s almost as if nobody here has read The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction or something!

(The “plus one” reason is that the show is full of naked lolis, which is either a massive draw for you or yet another reason why we can’t have nice things.)

So between the ear-bleeding voices, lack of funny, awful funservice, and tons of stock footage, the first season is pretty terrible. The second season is an improvement, but ultimately what’s the point? I hated every single character at this point, so even after they introduce the Bizarro Valkyrie storyline (replacing the unfunny humor with a little bit of action), they’re closing the barn door after the horse has left.

Would I watch it even if I weren’t forced? This is easily in the bottom 10 of all the shows I’ve seen in this series.
