“The Evolution of the Weeaboo.”

englishteacherInspired by various friends who have told me all stories about teaching and living in Japan. In other news, Manga Studio is pretty awesome, I missed using it. This is the typical format that B&W comics would follow. What does everyone think? I personally like toning more than color (because I can get away with crappier art  )

  1. Yeah, this is pretty accurate. You’d think that teaching in Japan would be awesome because you’d be inundated with otaku culture, but you’re really not. Despite their running rampant on the interwebs, otaku and otaku anime are actually pretty hard to come by in Japan. Only if you’re in a few select cities will you find any of those. Chances are, you’ll only be able to find work in rural or suburban areas, and there, not a single person gives a shit about your loli animu. Oh, and the students are rotten. Good luck spending a full year trying to earn their respect, only to relocate and have to start from scratch.

  2. Awesome. A solution to the weeaboo problem without the consequences of beating some sense into them. Too bad the worst will never have the skills or money to lead them to Japan.

Great comic again. The lack of color doesn’t make it any less funny.

  3. ROFLMAO! Only as a turist i would go to Japan someday i hope and visit all Asia ^^

  4. I remember reading somewhere about Young Students having a faible to smash/kick into the teachers crotch.
Japan equals Akiba for most people but they have to experience firsthand that theres so much more to Japan

  5. To be fair, I have spoken to many people who taught there and loved the experience. Though they probably didn’t go there expecting it to be Animeland.

  6. I go to an anime club at college, and am highly dismayed that most of the people who want to go there expect it to be “otakuland” or something completely bullshittily impossible. There’s only one guy who’s actually more into the culture and language instead of the “let’s Akibahara” concept of Japan of the rest, and that’s sad.

  7. Speaking on a similar account as Jonathan Tappan’s, a classmate and a very dear friend of mine once taught in Japan through the JET program who actually enjoyed the experience (and recommended me to it ^^ ). Of course, his stay there dates back about 10 years ago, where otaku and otaku-related diction weren’t as prominent as they are now.

Conclusion? Anybody now who would want to visit Japan for the sake of otakudom is most likely a weaboo..

    • Back around 2003 when I was in college, I went to a JET presentation and the person there talking had done the program in 2000 and yeah, there wasn’t that same “I LOVE JAPAN PERIOD!” Akiba Disneyland desire among the people there. Most of us just thought that it would be a fun thing to do for a year or two after graduating since we didn’t have anything else lined up.

  8. rofl thanks for sharing your experiences on this guys. it’s good to hear more opinions on this.

p.s. this comic = Renai Blogger 2

  9. HAHA sounds like me– after all the warnings, slaps upside the head, and reading the Gajinsmash blog– no matter what, all i hear is: abundance of morning musume, pocky, and anime FTW! (wow do i sound like an 30yr male otaku or what… fyi im a 19yr old girl) i and thus makes me wanna join the JET program

  10. Unless you look like them. Or are Daniel Choo.

The Australian Federal Police are watching your every move Shin. >_>

  11. I actually want to go to japan and teach english for a year, and from what i read the people who bitch about usually don’t realize 3 things.

1.) Its a full time job, a lot of people assume they can make wayyyyyyyyyy more money out of college working the same part time hours they did while in college. Your wrong. Your going to work 30-40 hours a week for 200,000 yen to 270,000 yen a month. If you don’t know what that is in dollars, then you really didn’t take teaching english very seriously

2.) Your teaching english. Not talking about how cool dannychoo is or how awesome haruhi is. And you don’t get a whole lot of flexibility on the material you teach. I mean why the fuck would they let some 23 year with a business degree teach english to their students?? I mean do you honestly think that they consider you well suited to teach just because you were raised speaking english. Maybe after a couple of years you can change a few things, but for the most part you have to stick to their curriculum. And there is such a thing as being over qualified to teach english. A lot of schools are willing hire the shitty college grad and pay him shit than pay some one who actually has a degree in teaching a foreign language and pay that guy more.

3.) Your not japanese. You never will be, and you will always be the gaijin. Sucks for you!!!!!! If you look japanese then you’ll get by a little better, but once you speak or tell someone your name they’ll know instantly that your a gaijin.

Ps chopsticks suck ass if you never used them.

  12. Author> I thought he was just studying abroad? I didn’t know he was teaching English

    ひでぽん>8年前そのブログ読みましたw

Left> You basically outlined the jokes in my comic xD

Britney> Maybe its different if you do an exchange for a month or something, where you’re still technically just like a “tourist”

  13. @Leftarrow

The JET program pays 300,000 per month PLUS a living stipend (which if you’re not in an urban area will cover your entire rent), AND that’s TAX FREE. Back in 2003, the yen was at 120 to the dollar. Now that it’s down to around 100, that’s a SHITLOAD of money. That’s about $50,000 per year! Even at 120/dollar, the woman that talked to us had enough money saved to buy a car when she got back to America.

  17. Renai Blogger 2? Yes please! A weeaboo who has all those misconceptions about Japan gets thrown to the holy land itself and went through hell. It would be a total lulz.

  18. I’m wondering, will I be discriminated against for being white? I really do want to have a feel of the Japanese culture, and I actually do want to become a teacher, but should I just drop the Japan thing and try another country?

  19. @jpmeyer: Most people who teach in Japan aren’t fortunate enough to be participating in the JET program.

  20. I’m wondering, will I be discriminated against for being white?

Yes, you have “dirty ignorant gaijin” written all over your face for being white. Just liek I do at my job in AMERICA in a Japanese company.

  21. *sigh* Man, and I really wanted to enjoy myself. Why are they so discriminant?

  22. @Hinano: mmmm yea hahah i guess my whole post was pointless

    @Jpmeyer: 300,000 a month at 120 yen to dollar is only 30,000 a year.

At 100 yen its 36 thousand dollars.

And keep in mind japan has one of the highest living expenses of the whole world.

    • The JET money is tax free, though, so $36k is equivalent to what you have get on your paycheck if a gross income of around $50k in America. That said, I don’t know why the JET money is tax free while teaching anywhere else is taxed.

  23. so teaching in japan is not a good idea for the wapanese. but what about studying abroad. just to comic school. cuz i want to be a comic artist (mangaka) in the states but i want the japanese training. because i can’t find good comic schools here. unless anybody knows any?
