I originally had an idea to do MS Paint based impressions but I realized I have a lot more to say.
Well JP & I are back from Disneyworld and we had a great time. Such a great time that I completely forgot about anime while watching shows about wholesome shotas and teenage bitches. I’m also tired as all hell because we had to get up at 4AM to catch our flight. So yes a bootleg jetlag is influencing all that I watch today however I’ve ben seeing tweets all week about every show that’s aired forcing me to make some “pre-judgemental thoughts” that I later confirmed after watching said show. (The image above should confirm your suspicions.)
K-ON:
So as I had expected this show is a piece of crap. Yes it’s a piece of crap because at multiple times of the show did the girl’s hands and legs look like those of a drunken scarecrow. The main character, whatever her name is, Yui or something, is an annoying moe blob there to obviously attract all the pedo/moe otaku and sell figures/hentai/doujinshi and (maybe) DVDs. Fetishes are everywhere, the character style/design annoys me to no end (reminds me of that horrible Yukine arc from Clannad AS) and well frankly I couldn’t give 2 shits about 4 girls in a band. Now you can all get your panties in a bunch.
JP: The whole time while we watched the show, we just kept eyerolling. Every single frame and every single one of the characters’ actions felt like it was there specifically to make you think that it was moe. If there was an opportunity for Yui to say, trip, not only would she trip, she’d fall in a way so that she’d land on her oh-so-moe fanny. I could have sworn that one of the concepts of moe was that something that’s moe isn’t supposed to know that it’s moe, yet every aspect of K-ON felt so calculated in its attempt to be moe.
Asura Cryin’:
The main character has this strand of hair that looks like you could hang bath towels or perhaps coats off it. All he needs is a little hairspray to get it stiff enough. In addition no matter how I look at it, the ghost chick looks like Nanoha. I haven’t even watched Nanoha and I think that.
Overall the show was hard to pay attention to (mainly because I’m dead tired) but it has some potential so I’ll check out a few more episodes to see how it goes. If it goes anything like Kurokami it will join it in my dropped bin.
JP: I actually thought that this show looked pretty cool. I liked the fact that it seemed like it could go off in any number of directions at any time. Magical girlfriend show? Mecha adventure? School life hijinks mixed with action secret identities? Sweet!
Gokujou! Mechamote Iinchou:
At first I thought Di Gi Charat drew this anime but then I realized it’s just a really girly shoujo manga style. The opening theme was really catchy and probably the catchiest one yet. It’s like they made 3D models only to then use the cell shade filter on them so the animation is really rocky and looks odd at various points….ok all the fucking time. In addition, the first 9 minutes were in this weird 3D cell shade then all of a sudden at 9:03 it went back to normal 2D animation style.
Unfortunately then at like 9:30 it went back to the weird ass 3D cell shade. Overall this made it really difficult to follow the show and I really wanted to because I really like shoujo manga based anime. It even has romance! But yea I can’t stand the animation, it makes Akikan look like a pot of gold in comparison.
JP: The animation was so off that it was total uncanny valley land. Let’s say a character is turning her head. Her head would move slooooooooowly maybe halfway there and then suddenly jerk to the other side. At the same time, her hair would move at a slower speed and stop moving at the wrong time. It was so incredibly jarring that I honestly can’t see anyone trying to get through this show without it hurting your head or eyes.
Requiem for Phantom:
I’m getting so tired of the moe shit these days I think it’s time for me to take a completely different approach and watch a BEE TRAIN show! That’s right I’m going to watch this show until my eyes bleed (or until I realize there is never going to be any kind of romance between 2 assassins). I mean I think I’ve always avoided Beetrain shows mainly cause they always had an older girl and a younger girl team rather than a girl and a guy…so this is a bit refreshing. Ah we’ll see how far I go with this. Maybe my patience will be rewarded. Too bad they had to use Ali Project to do the ending credits =_=;.
JP: I’m honestly surprised that this show is getting watched. I missed almost all of it while getting dinner, but I mean, this is a freaking Bee Train show! Every single Bee Train show is about a pair of assassins who are very hard-boiled and shit. They are most certainly not about implied hand-holding and implied kissing in the last episode.
Valkyria Chronicles:
The most noticeable oddity of this show was that the characters all had weird pencil strokes in their shadows. As if someone drew the pencil lines and forgot to erase them underneath the artwork. I think they were going for the game style design but I don’t think it worked just as keikaku. The ending theme was really catchy and overall I really liked the feel of the series. Before I continue watching this series though, someone PLEASE tell me there is romance/a pairing. I don’t want to sit through another Abyss of Disappointment.
Full Metal Alchemist 2009:
I’m not really sure what to call this. It’s not a sequel since it’s a remake so we’ll roll with the whole 2009 thing since that’s what Kyoani did with Kanon. Overall it’s a nice start – even though I hardly recall that guy from the manga. Maybe it was so early on that I just don’t remember it. Or maybe the only prominent scene in my head is where Winry goes to strip in her room and Ed is sitting there eating a sandwich
In any case I look forward to this series the most, even if we have to see some “repeated” scenes. At least they are (or appear to be) completely re-animated rather than a replay of season 1.
JP: I only watched the old anime and never actually read the manga, so I’m basically coming in with a clean slate as to expectations for what this is “supposed” to be like. It’s also been so long since I saw the first series that I don’t really remember who any of the voices were other than Ed and Al, so the new changes don’t feel “weird” to me other than going like “Tee hee, Lockon plays Roy!” or “‘Roy Mustang’ is still a better porn actor name than ‘Lockon Stratos’”.
Tayutama -Kiss on my Deity-
I had the urge to listen to ave;new after watching this episode
Ok I know this is a harem/fanservicy show but it’s SO CUTE. I mean those EYES and EARS and lack of shota rape make it such a better alternative to Kanokon. Also the cute bouncy animals make it a lot more fun to watch than cool and spicy wolf. Anyway they have plenty of opportunity to get obnoxious and annoying with this series but hopefully it won’t be too awful and I’ll continue to watch it.
JP: Unfortunately, as this is not Nursery Rhyme, they did not play the Kishimen song.
P.S. I didn’t watch Queens Blade. I knew it was going to be porn, and if you thought otherwise you are a complete naive idiot. I saw a ton of shared posts about it on google reader though. Gives a whole new thought to the term “milk jugs” doesn’t it?
More previews coming later this week or something. *drops dead* (*-μ-`*).゚。.
JP: I, however am going to attempt to watch an episode of Queen’s Blade. I doubt that I’ll be able to get any further than that, but this could even outdo Dragonaut as a monument to gigantic boob-filled QUALITY.
I Liked K-on!’s ED all u say af the others series is so true I liked Saki tough but u haven’t watched (I know U’ll be rough but true xD) nice to c u back ^^

About K-ON, the only thing I cared about was Mio and the ending so I probably will continue to watch because of that. Asura Crying is definitely interesting to watch. Anyway, I just hope someone will subs some of the other “unpopular” one like Polyphonica which I think is pretty awesome since they now follow the game with only a couple adjustments. Queens Blade? What is with that seriously?

Yeah, that’s exactly the way I felt, but I still kept falling for it anyway D:
If you really want some bunched panties, take a cheap shot at Mio. That’ll make the fanboys RAEG
I agree, Tayutama was just way too many degrees of cute. As long as it doesn’t devolve into endless fanservice, it should be at least mildly entertaining.

=O Someone else who didn’t like K-ON?!!?!? homg I’m not alone after all. Word to all the reasons you listed.
I just watched Asura Cryin’ this morning and think it’s pretty good so far. =D

I think even people who like K-On! can agree that it’s just blatant moe stuffed in more moe that moves around a lot more than anyone is actually capable of moving. But the fanboys who fall in love with a girl after one episode will defend it anyway.
And Mechamote Iinchou is just disappointing, even though all I wanted was a shoujo series that doesn’t either have a stupid girl or stupid drama, but I can’t watch that animation.
But at least now I want to watch Tayutama~ I was wondering if the apparent cuteness was worth it.

Enjoy Queen’s Blade JP, I think I’ve told like, everyone I know IRL who ever watched naughty anime ever about it, just because it’s so LULZ in the “ouch” way.
Hinano: Several pairing in Valkyria Chronicles. For fans of the game, it’s heavily speculated as to how many pairs are there going to be in the anime besides the 2 main ones in the game.

Welkin x Alicia.

Good to have you back!
I hated K-ON too I didn’t finished watching the damn thing, and since then I’ve tried to forget it. The same with Queen’s Blade since I downloaded the episode by mistake. Acid squirting boobs, oh the horror!
I absolutely loved Tatuyama and it was good to see that there wasn’t much fanservice.

First episode of FMA2K9 (heh, sounds like a sports video game title) was filler. It’s there to intro all the Amestris characters to the audience (and in some cases Al and Ed) and remove some of the need to redo stories that occurred in both the first anime and the manga, and get to the point where they diverged as quickly as possible. Anything that was in both but different between the two (the Shou Tucker incident, for example) will probably be redone, and I expect a fair bit of that part of the plot should be run by us in a detail-stripped fashion, but I wouldn’t expect anything else to be done in detail except Ed and Al’s “accident” (next ep), Youswell (gotta introduce Yoki), Laboratory 5, and MH vs Envy.

Glad you guys are back.
Agree with omo, Queen’s Blade is a great show for lulz. You don’t see many shows like that airing on network TV lol.
I think the FMA episode had an anime-original story since I don’t recall any of the stuff in the manga.

@ nazarielle
Haha, at cheat shot at Mio will make the fans rage. Now I feel funny since I totally like her now too…. this might be bad or something.
Oh yeah, watching Queens Blade for the lulz to me would still be rather hard. It’s so…. uugh.

Yay, glad you guys are back too.
Re: keion, I plan to watch it just cuz I’m a girl in a band so I’ve got a vested interest but I agree with EVERYTHING you pointed out. Thus, I’m feeling totally conflicted (I posted a similar-but-different rant on my blog about this too, ugh). I don’t wanna hate the show just because I hate the show’s fans, pervy loathsome moe-fanboy trash that they are… Then again, dunno how long I can handle Yui’s “moe” characterization bordering on complete mental retardation for the sake of the creeps who are into that.
Maybe I should just watch Queens Blade instead – at least that shit is pornographically blatant about its fetishization. Forget moe, somehow straight-up TITS feels more honest/doesn’t make me want to throw up in my mouth a tiny bit.

Wow, you guys come back from your marital get away and you have time to watch all that?! I commend you. I still have a head ache and back pains from the con I attended this past weekend and the only things I watched from the new season is the new fma anime and dragon ball kai. Despite what you said about gokujou it’s still all my to watch list. I desperately need a good shoujo anime this season after the farce that was toradora and the wtf nothing is resolved ending of skip beat.

Welcome back ^^.
Out of all the new series that you’ve both watched I only tried (I repeat TRIED) to watch K-ON. I know it was going to be awful so I skipped through the whole episode. What a piece of moe poo it was -_-;. And then I went to some “Asian-English guy who live in Japan right now” blog and it was like hundreds of replies like MOEEEE/lovetodeath/kawaiiii under his post about K-ON… I really rather watch 100th episode of Naruto Shitpooden than this shite, there must be something wrong with me ;( .
Today I’ll try to watch something else to wash away bad after taste (please Japan give us at least one or two decent series @_@).

K-ON is the best show of the season, simply for its refreshing casting choices. On the opposing end of the spectrum is Saki, a graduate of Seiyuu Typecasting 101.

Hinano is a closet shota-con!
I shall call it F-OFF from now. (actually from last week. >_>)
OI! Di Gi Charat only draws yaoi Kyo X Iori doujinshi/anime! You must be talking about Puchiko >_>
Phantom is based on Nitroplus+’ Phantom for Inferno H-game. Not as Cthulu-ly but supposely dark bloody drama.
No, I think the Asura Cryin’ main character looks like the orange-hair rippoff of nanoha from that whatchamacallit supposed third series. Pure loli-Nanoha FTW!
Many lumps of sugar.
Maybe after 6 months of abstainence I will watch something but it still isn’t very promising.

I unfortunately found myself enjoying K-ON!, though not in any powerful way. It sort of “digested” easily, in a sort of vaguely pleasant way. Or it might’ve just been the fact that my subwoofer reproduced the bass in that show really well, and bass lines always make me happy.
Yui really is overdone though, and I have a very high moe tolerance. I hold a vested, and somewhat morbid interest in how KyoAni expects to better themselves each week with this clearly intentional moe though, since the first episode is already bordering ridiculous both in scale and in how much of that stuff they’ve compacted in a single episode. I also wonder if they’re going to just totally trivialize the process of learning guitar….
Uh, liked the random DMC moment, and if there was anything about it that I could appreciate, it was that they were all bad enough that even a dumbass like Yui could tell they weren’t good (rather than a bunch of dumb teenagers with only a small bit of musical experience being magically good). I too am at fault for liking Mio the best. :\ But I have a thing for people on bass guitars.
Asura Cryin’ I received without much reaction too. The levitating boobs like Koihime Musou bothered me when they reared their uglyhead, and I just became unable to take it seriously for a while. The mechas look cool though, while the action scenes weren’t particularly impressive. Overall, I think the show failed at providing a real “hook”, while the whole ending off at a cliffhanger was just a cheap ploy to retain watches. >_> I’ll probably keep watching at least for a while, but at this point, I can’t honestly expect to see a seinen-ish action series very different from say, things like Kurokami, or Shana. Always end up kinda samey.
Valkyria: Romance up the wazhoo. I’m not sure if I should watch the show. I already play the game, after all. Hrm…
FMA: Had fun, the one brief close up on Riza’s face really made my day. I feel the height gag was used one too many times for just that one episode though….
The visuals of the blood projectiles was well done. I too have totally forgotten voices, so I wasn’t in the least affected by the change up with Roy.
Seeing Hughes again was depressing though….
I dunno, fun stuff. Will watch.
Saki: I haven’t watched yet, but am definitely going to. But that’s just cause I like watching these kinds of shows. Of course, I’ll probably be disappointed when the directing work works out to be a billion times inferior to that of whoever handled shows like Akagi or Kaiji or One Outs. But oh well.

Once I also heard Saki had Yuri in it I was really glad I skipped it
I think the anime “Nana” was a better series about a “girl in a band” than K-on will ever be lol.
We came back like at noon cause we had to get up at 4AM for our flight. This left me half dead when watching all of these shows so it was REALLY REALLY hard to pay attention to any of them.

I’ve watched Tayutama and I have to agree with you on that one. Mashiro is soo adorable *^^* too bad that she grew up a little bit from her first childish form. Yuuri-sian sounded so much nicer thay Yuuri-san, and in her childish form Mashiro wasn’t reeking of kawai/moe vibe either, it was a nice mix of someone with a 500 year life experience talking in a bit childish manner. My only hopes are that Ameri won’t turn in a twatblocking tsundere bitch too much…
