Clannad After Story 22 (Finale)

I'M SO HAPPY I COULD CRY...WAIT TOO LATE

I'M SO HAPPY I COULD CRY...WAIT TOO LATE

BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW 。・ ゚・。* 。 +゚。・.。* ゚ + 。・゚・(ノД`)ヽ(。´▽`。)ノ

The ending was perfect. It was exactly like the game, this is everything I had hoped for. (Well I was hoping that Tomoya & Nagisa would kiss but I’ll have to stick to the fanarts for that one I guess xD)

clanimage002So because you as the game player have now completed all the endings and gotten everyone’s hikari no dama, you can restart the game once more and get the true happy ending where Nagisa lives happily ever after with Ushio & Tomoya. ワ―ヾ(●´∀`●)ノ―イッ

A game CG

A game CG

Tomoya, Nagisa & Ushio once again visit that field of flowers where Ushio runs around (like she did at the OP of season 1). In the game all the final CGs were kinda sketchy so it was nice to see them done in normal color here.

clanimage004

Kyo never changes

Kyo is still a kindergarten teacher with the giant Button being the kids’ pony :lol:

Ryo has become a nurse

Ryo has become a nurse

Sadly we could not see the arc with Ryo and her future husband :P Too bad I don’t have my Clannad game review post to refer to, but while she was a nurse one of the story light ball endings was for Ryo and Kappei. It was quite hillarious too but also sad and emotional. I wish they had cut out all those wasted baseball episodes and squished that arc in instead but I guess I’m asking too much :roll:

No loli 4 u.

No loli 4 u.

One of the few characters that actually changed is Mei. I admit I like her a lot more as an adult woman than a loli rofl. The sad part is, they showed Sunohara learning to drive before this scene and he looked like he was actually YOUNGER than her. :lol:

Another game CG scene

Another game CG scene

This was another game CG scene that was all sketchy. Nice to see it in full color and stuff.

A happy couple

A happy couple

Nice shot of Nagisa & Tomoya here. So happy that they got a happy ending ;^;

NOT THIS AGAIN ;___;

NOT THIS AGAIN ;___;

I was already getting teary eyed and shit before this but no they gotta bring the Tomoya with his dad scene again sending me into a hurricane of tears. 。゚(●゚´Д)ノ。゚ヽ( )ノ゚。ヽ(Д`゚●)ノ゚。。゚ヽ(●゚´Д`゚●)ノ゚。ウワァァァン!!

A girl sleeping in the forest...

A girl sleeping in the forest...

...was Ushio all along :)

...was Ushio all along (*´∇`)

Basically as you play the game and if you noticed in the titles of the episodes under the tree there were various “white balls”. That’s the hikari no dama. Once you collect them all you get Ushio. Sounds like some kind of pokemon game :lol: but it was interesting to see that when I had completed the game as well. Now I finally know what that Fuuko scene was, I skipped it in the game cause I was so tired of hearing her voice :twisted:

I know I didn’t cover Kotomi or Tomoyo or Yukine but they just looked the same to me. I mean the difference at least with Kotomi she was driving a car (presumeably in America) but with Tomoyo she just…stood there. Yukine was still in that stupid bar waching a bunch of thugs arm wrestling. Yea they all kinda got shafted, but no I really don’t care. Aside from Nagisa’s ending, my only other favorite “main girl” storyline end was Kyo’s. The rest of my favs were all the sub-stories in the After Story arc. Anyway really great ending, I’ll give KyoAni that. I just wish that the great job they did with the 2nd half of after story they would have done with the first half and the first series while we’re at it. Was there a director change midway? Did someone finally kick the troll director in the ass and tell him to get back to work? Who knows, regardless whoever you are, thank you. ドォ━m(*´Д`)m━モォ!!

A final note next week (or whenever the hell it airs) there will be a special about how Nagisa met Tomoya from her POV.

  1. So, the next week isn’t going to be what would’ve happened had Tomoya had a ‘bad’ end? It sounded to me as if it were showing what would’ve happened had Nagisa and Tomoya not met at the foot of that hill (i.e. he ignored her this time around). Not that I’d mind seeing the first day rehashed from Nagisa’s POV, but I was hoping to see what would’ve happened that day had Tomoya not called out to Nagisa.

  2. No it’s like a point of view before Tomoya met Nagisa. Nagisa is shown coming home saying she has no friends again (since she got left back) but then is talking about how she met Tomoya.

  3. Ushio – Gotta collect the loli.

    Who pressed the big reset button and reset the timeline?

  4. Yeahhh that’s the attitude KyoAni!!!! ^_^ this episodes deserves to be watched in 720p definitively will get a dvd or blu-ray rip thanxs

  5. Steven> As I explained, the game gives you the “true end” once you play it over from the start after getting every ending – hence why the anime had a reset ending as well.

  6. What happened was Ushio when she died before in another time line. A version of her was created in the illusionary world and created a body for Tomoya who un-consciously knew the world existed. The point of this world was to collect these orbs. Enough of them grants a wish. The wish saved Nagias from her disease which is linked to the town and that place. Once this was done Nagisa would not die giving birth since her sickness was cured as it was related to that place.

  7. FINALLY! I was really getting anxious and impatient as to when and where those glowing light orbs were going to pop out. At least they could’ve gradually made them appear over the last couple of episodes instead of unleashing them all at once. But after seeing how it ended, I have no reason to complain. :)

  8. I cried with the game. omg I don’t know if I should watch this; I’m afraid to go into emo-mode again.

    no one likes a cry baby T-T!!!!!!
    ./starts crying

  9. I don’t know if it’s my memory failing me but Ryou’s nurse uniform seems to be a lot better than the one in the game.

    This said I must say I’m perfectly satisfied by KyoAni treatment, it kept its emotional power and even if some parts weren’t handled that well, CLANNAD is still one the most compelling experience (first as a VN, then as an anime) I had these last year.

    Thanks Jun Maeda, Key and KyoAni <3

    Random thoughts:
    - Mei-chan sure grew up well!
    - Kotomi’s car seems to have the driver’s seat on the right-side, does she have a preference for Japanese or English cars? :p
    - A retelling of their meeting from Nagisa’s POV for ep23? I sure want to see this (maybe we can expect a 24th ep as an exclusive-dvd ep)

  10. Alright, kidding aside. Did they show Tomoya finding all the balls of light, and then show some sort of rewind happening? How did they segue between last week’s utter disaster of a situation to this one, and explain how two people who died, suddenly didn’t after all?

    Did they even try?

  11. @Steven

    If you go back and watch the opening titles of Clannad episodes, you’ll notice a new light orb appear at the end of each arc.

    As for the how they connected the reset – I haven’t seen it so I couldn’t tell ya xP

  12. That said, I kinda wish they would cut the next episode and do a treatment of Kyou’s arc like they did for Tomoyo…but maybe longer than just one episode. 2 Episodes really isn’t that much to ask for right? T_T

  13. The couple isnt lovey dovey as i had hoped? They should at least show it really good this episode, i mean heck nagisa’s been absent for like the more quarter of the series, plus timeline wise, she and tomoya has been separated for more than 5 years.

  14. @X

    remember how before they had ushio they didn’t even kiss nor did they sleep together. they’re just one of those weird couples.

    I also believe tomoya does not remember a thing.

  16. I didn’t like the way they executed the final final end. In Kanon they made great use of the ED song, but in Clannad it’s just kinda there after that subtle fade to white cue. flwlkJFWIJEFJoijO*&$(UW(Fojiw4u0urJ FSOIJ(屮゜Д゜)屮

  17. I just watched it – what a wonderful ending ;A; I QQed at how wonderful the piano was when Tomoya ran after Nagisa. So heart warming ;A;

    そうですねアフターストーリーはとっても素晴らしい話でしたです。(いっぱい泣いてましたけど;ー;)

    lelangir> I think the ending song for the after story was pretty much a failboat from beginning to end. the worst was when it played after Nagisa’s death episode (屮゜Д゜)屮

    Eleu> lol I will have to pass. besides tomoyo already got her episode, how about a Ryo or Kyo Arc!

    Ragna> Yea the Tomoya x Nagisa scene was so beautiful ;^;

  19. Yeah I hate Torch because they’ve insisted on continuing to use it. Should have gotten a new ED song for these last 10 or so episodes. Torch is the just pouring salt on the wounds.

  20. Just watched it… an ending that makes me happy despite all the griefs I witnessed – good luck, Tomoya, Nagisa and Ushio! Have a great family life, even though you are made of pixels. Also good luck to all other characters. I wish nobel prize to Kotomi, may Tomoyo become first female PM in Japan. That was a series that made me cry and laugh and I am happy now to see it complete.

  21. When are we going to get Little Busters the anime? That’s what I’m looking forward to more than Clannad.

  22. it was a ok ep. fuu-chan is still cool. and they all live happy ever after it was sooooooo sweet

  23. After the song finished after showing everyone I was ” Fuuko?!… O wait there she is.. xD; ”

    “Once you collect them all you get Ushio. Sounds like some kind of pokemon game” – Lmao

    Well it did better than most animes that actually do show the characters kiss, in my opinion atleast. But still would’ve been nice to show <3

  24. Well, better was to see the scene when Nagisa tells parents that she’s done “H things” with Tomoya :P

  25. Hmmm… maybe it’s because I didn’t play the game, but I felt that this entire episode undermined everything leading up to it. Maybe it’s just me, or maybe it’s them. Who knows.

    Maybe some people liked that the events after Nagisa’s death were effectively erased from existence as though they had never existed for a happy end to occur, but personally, I feel unsatisfied considering those were probably the best moments of the show, seeing as they conveyed the theme of family in its rawest form.

    ——————————————————–
    The ending I thought would happen (NORMAL END):
    Tomoya reconciles with Nagisa in his dreams (just like in the anime), waking up, and subsequently bringing Ushio to the place that grant wishes, and begs the city to the city to bring Ushio back to life while holding her in his arms and crying on his knees. It zooms in on Ushio’s giving a reaction of sorts, and then we get a distant shot of the two.

    From there, they’d time skip years later with Ushio grown up looking like herself from the other world. The end could have had Tomoya doing an epilogue at a gravestone, reflecting on Ushio grew up, and how everyone has been doing since that time Ushio nearly died. After finishing Akio tells him to hurry up, since they’re meeting up to have reunion with everyone for whatever celebratory reason that entails a reunion.

    At the very end, he leaves flowers, say his what he has left to say, and tell her he’ll be back again next year. The image zooms in the tombstone, while we see Tomoya, Ushio, Akio and Sanae walk off in the distance talking and laughing.

    Tomoya asks her if she ever wished that her mother was with her while she was growing up, she replies with, “Mom’s always been with us”

    The reply prompts Tomoya turn his head over to look at the tombstone once more before departing, and he sees Nagisa spirit waving. He replies in turn with a smile, “Yeah, that’s right.”

    This is just the ending I pictured. Saving a girl dying of an unknown disease is a much more plausible miracle than turning back the time, and would probably be less wtf to a lot of people. This wouldn’t have undermined the post-life after Nagisa death time line either, and would have probably ended on a bittersweet, yet happy note.

    Anyways, sorry for the fanfic ending thing. Just couldn’t help but express what I thought the ending was going to be.

  26. Well, finally watched the episode (actually procrastinated by marathoning 19-22).

    Deep breath. Sigh. *sits there in silence for awhile before turning back to reality – learning how to sue the government*

  27. Rawr> That would have been nice but would have also left a lot of Clannad game fans disappointed since a lot of us wanted the “true” ending. Nagisa dying and Ushio dying wasn’t supposed to happen. It’s just like an “obstacle” Tomoya has to suffer through to get the “true end”.

  28. Well, you can’t please everyone. For those who understood the ending and can make sense out of it, I guess it is a pretty nice ending. After all, only sick people with no heart hate happy ends for no reason, right?

    I’m just one of the few who was left going wtf due to the fact that it made very little sense to me. The events and reasons leading to such an ending felt weak and rushed; it just felt like the other world was a deus ex machina wish granting machine that conveniently allowed for a time reset. I felt it was contrived.

    Well, whatever. Nagisa’s alive, as well Ushio. All is well in the true end, so nothing to complain about, really. I just happened to find that Tomoya’s life was a lot more interesting in the other time line, but that’s just me.

  30. rawr> can’t be deus ex machina to begin with, the illusionary world is shown throughout the series and we already know the story isn’t set in 100% real world reality.

    @erased: I don’t think you get it… the events in 16-21 were never “erased”… they happened, and they must have happened for the story to work. Tomoya made both Nagisa but more importantly Ushio love him, and in turn Ushio created Tomoya a body in the illusionary world. Thus allowing for Tomoya to understand and create a miracle in the real world when Ushio dies in the illusionary world and they transfer back over to the real world.

  31. It is a Deus ex Machina.

    Again, this is based on a fan disk that was naturaly produced after the game was done, just because the Illusionary World existed does not mean it still does not come up as a Deus ex Machina.

    You have your happy ending, fine but I cry foul the same way I did with Macross Frontier for the exact same reasons.

  32. Shizuka> erased as in they never took place if Nagisa lives, even if they’re necessary for her to have not died in the first place. So yeah, I feel cheated that my fav parts sort of didn’t happen, but hey, everyone else who was hoping for Nagisa & Ushio to both live would also feel cheated if they didn’t go for a good end.

  33. Dakron> I don’t know what you’re talking about… this part of the story is in the visual novel (having both played through it and worked on the game English translation project), not some fandisk. I especially disagree with you on the “deus ex machina” part, and maybe our definitions don’t line up here.

    For it to be deus ex machina, a plot device that has no reason to be in the plot has to be triggered, solving everyone’s problems. No!
    1) the “reset” was not a random act from the author: note that Tomoya has been collecting “light orbs” at the end of every previous arc (see the episode title screens) necessary to produce the miracle; without the events of 16-21, Tomoya could not have earned Ushio’s love, required for him to have an existence in the illusionary world.
    2) magic (in particular, “miracles”) are part of the CLANNAD world: see Fuuko and Misae arcs, where it is key to the plot.
    3) the illusionary world is part of the CLANNAD world: since season 1. If you didn’t get it, see my earlier post.

    Rawr> I think I understood CLANNAD differently than you did. I felt the series was driven more by characters, rather than plot. So the “reset” that occurs in 22, while it completely “erased” plot progress, did NOT “erase” Tomoya’s character growth during 16-21. This was necessary for him to call out to Nagisa instead of the alternative:

    …I ought to call out.
    // …声をかけなければ。
    But…
    // でも…
    Would it be better not to do so…?
    // そうしないほうが良かったんじゃないのか…。
    It would be better not to get acquainted with a person like me…
    // 俺なんかと出会わなかったほうが…
    It would probably be better to part our ways here.
    // このまま、別々の道を歩いたほうが、良かったんじゃないのか。
    But…
    // でも…
    I…
    // 俺は…
    Call out
    // 呼ぶ
    Don’t call out
    //OMG NAGISA DIES –> leads to bad ending
    // 呼ばない
    “…NAGISA!”
    // 「…渚っ!」
    (Explanation [VN]:
    Pre-bad-end, Tomoya will call out to Nagisa but not knowing about Nagisa’s impending death, he can’t prevent Nagisa’s death during childbirth. After the bad end, Tomoya knows what kind of pain and suffering he and Ushio have had to experience, and can then make the decision to not put both Nagisa and Ushio through pain and suffering.
    Choosing not to call out leads to the bad end, as regretting meeting Nagisa means he regrets his relationship with Nagisa. She dies in childbirth right afterwards. Or, he can realize that Nagisa is his destined one, and he will stick with her regardless of what happens, no regrets. It is then that the miracle occurs.)
    Okay, kill me.

  35. erm well thats what I was saying…
    to get the “good end” you need all the hikari no dama, without it, you get the bad end, but since the bad end gives you a hikari no dama as well, you have to go through it in order to get the good end.

    it’s very much based on the way the game works. almost like an RPG strategy “gotta catch em all” sorta deal but when its translated into an anime, it really does feel like a deus ex machina because you didn’t physically see tomoya going “ALRIGHT GUYS I GOT like 6 BALLS only 4 to go!” or else it would seem like some kind of Pokemon show :lol:
