Clannad After Story 18

after1801Warning, watching this episode may cause red puffy eyes and a bucket full of tear soaked tissues.

This is it right here. This is the hard core Clannad After Story that made me cry a river and made me love the game. Clannad isn’t about making jokes of Kyou’s thighs in the gym shed. It’s not about Kotomi’s jiggling breasts as she plays baseball. It’s not about Tomoyo beating the shit out of everybody and it’s not about Fuuko and her stupid ass starfish. It’s about Nagisa and Tomoya and the past, present and future.

after1805Oh geez I’m still crying as I’m writing this post. I’m gonna have to buy some more tissue boxes before this show ends.  (つÅ;。)スンスン…

And as always the ending theme is stupidly inappropriate so I’m listening to dango daikazoku instead.

  1. I must invest in tissues manufacturing company next time a Key VN is being animated :)
And Kyo-Ani is doing it in so touching, moving way that even old cynic like me is moved.

  2. The way Tomoya recalled his childhood memories with his father while watching Ushio search for the robot. The way his father’s mother Shino was introduced, and the way she made Tomoya realize how much effort his father had putted into trying to raised him and how pathetic he’s been as a father to Ushio he’s been was all handled amazingly well. It delivered of its intended impact, yet it was so subtle, that it never felt contrived.

His reconciliation with Ushio was also pretty handled well, even if it was a bit too predictable

Honestly though, the scene that probably had the most poignant moment to me was most likely the one where he Tomoya suddenly broke down while telling Ushio about the kind of person Nagisa was. That truthfully made me realize how much Nagisa meant to him, and seriously, it made me empathize with him even though I’ve never lost a loved one.

Truthfully, what I would have loved to have seen was Nagisa’s funeral scene. I’m sure that no matter who and no matter what spoilers the person had seen, watching everyone send Nagisa off with a funeral would have made the realization that she was gone, and never coming back a lot stronger. The fact that they waited until now to reinforce that message, however, means that they might were waiting for this moment instead of a funeral to reinforce her death. If that really was what they were waiting for, then all I can say is it was well-played. Very well-played.

Overall, this is truly one of the most touching episode in the entire clannad series, if not in the history of anime. I have absolutely no freaking complaints. None at all. In fact, the theme of family was so freaking prevalent in this episode, it made me appreciate my parents a little more. It made me want to call my mother up, and ask her how she’s been. It made me want to give my old man a hug.

Hell, it even almost made me uncontent with the sage like lifestyle I’ve had these last few years, and actually made me want to get off my lazy ass and once more try to find that person who I could love as much as Tomoya loved Nagisa. Truthfully, this episode was the epitome of the definition low blow for the perpetually single, especially with Valentine’s day being tomorrow. It was like a smack in the face for me, but a heartfelt and well-deserved one that I appreciated and needed.

Everything that this episode was an example of what Clannad could have, and should have been. That is, it should have been a beautifully animated, well-written, emotional tear jerking dramatic masterpiece that relentlessly played at the audience’s heart strings; in other words, a tragedy, but instead, it chose to be more of a playful comedy with some heartfelt moments. A shame. That’s all I can say if this episode was any indication to what the series could have been.

  3. orz. I really should just start writing these tl;dr comments in word, so that I can actually notice my writing mistakes. An edit button would be appreciated, but alas, the fault lies with me.

  4. Rawr> Nice write xD Can’t add any scripts here since we’re hosted freely on wordpress now.

Regarding your comment on what Clannad should have been: It was, but only in game format. If you want to see it in its full greatness by all means play the game. If you think this episode was depressing wait till you fully play through all the arcs in the game. The anime didn’t do any of them justice. It’s a damn shame and once you play the game you will realize this.

  5. lovely ^^… juz beware not to shock your keyboard with your own tears…. (the reason i had’t been posting for the past few months)

  6. Torch will probably always annoy me, but the episode really was excellent. This has to be one of the most unique anime I’ve ever seen, despite it’s cookie-cutter first appearances.

  7. This was a masterful episode. I marathoned 15-18 and 16 and 18 were b’aaaww fests ;_;.

I haven’t played through After Story in the VN yet, but if it’s even better, I need to get it unlocked now.

  8. My only complaint with this episode is that they piled like thre crying scenes right on top of each other. Well, I guess it worked, but couldn’t they have spread it over two episodes at least?

  9. They did very well in compressing the game scenes into the anime.

Manly tears were at the corners of my eyes.

  10. “A daughter can do everything a waifu can, if not more…..”

Watch too much inc*st hentai ?
