the winter anime season always sucks

No really, it does. I looked at the January anime premieres on AniDB for every year this decade, and for the most part the Winter season was easily the worst season. A breakdown:

2000: There were only 3 series this season to begin with: Boogiepop, Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran, and Candidate for Goddess. Meanwhile, the spring season alone had three shows that I really liked in Gatekeepers, Vandread, and Ayashi no Ceres.

2001: At least this time there are 5 series. I guess Arjuna is the best one? I only got a few episodes in before I got bored.

2002: This was the first exception, with three decent shows: Full Metal Panic, Rahxephon, and the Toei Kanon.

2003: Yeah, don’t even get started on 2003…I MEAN THE BEST ANIME WAS MOUSE WHEW NOW NOBODY WILL THINK THAT I’M A PEDO

2004: This year did have three good shows in Jubei-chan 2, Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex S2, and MariMite, but the rest of the season was gawdawful. I’m talking stuff like Burn Up Scramble, Divergence Eve: Misaki Chronicles, Mezzo Forte, and Cosprayers.

2005: Yes, while this season had shows like Air, Negima, Oh My Goddess, and SukiSho, there was absolutely nothing for me. Also, ugh Girls Bravo S2 and Ultimate Girls.

2006: The irony is that while 2006 was easily, EASILY the best year for anime this decade, there was nothing at the start of the year to make me think that the rest of the year would turn out that way. Do I have to say that Fate/Stay Night was the best show this season? I really don’t want to. Especially when the best shows of the other seasons were shows like Ouran High School Host Club, Haruhi, Code Geass, and so on.

2007: My choice here is Nodame Cantabile, but that’s also because a lot of the other shows this season that other people liked did absolutely nothing for me, like Hidamari Sketch or Manabi Straight.

2008: Finally, we have the outlier. Winter 2008 was actually good! Persona was interesting, KimiAru was gleefully stupid (LOL her name is “Penis”? Ohhhh, OK it’s actually “Benis”), and there were plenty of shows which while I didn’t care about them, a lot of other people quite liked, like True Tears, another season of Aria, Zetsubou Sensei, Cool and Spicy Wolf, and Rosario + Vampire. Ok, maybe not so much the last one.

2003: Nanaka 6/17, Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto, Memories Off 2nd

and the rest is history ;p

  2. the winter anime season always sucks
you mean “the next anime season always sucks” *rimshot*

Interesting to see how the number of anime titles each season has increased drastically over the years, though, as a a side point.

  3. Hantsuki rocked hard in Winder 2006. Too bad it was followed up by the exceptionally disappointing Shinigami no Ballad.

  4. HanTsuki is a romantic drama where one of the characters has Hepatitis. DO NOT WANT.

  5. Hinano> Interestingly…. I watched only Tenbatsu and that was only because someone recommended it. Bad choice.

Wait… there was one good winter show. Winter Garden. >_>

    -nyo.

  6. following Hinano…

    2000:
Candidate for Goddess (this never ended!)
    Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran

Hakaima Sadamitsu (dropped but had a positive impression, just want to mention this title)

    2002:

    Onegai Teacher
Aquarian Age (I really liked this for some reason)

    Stratos 4 (dropped)
Mouse (JP is onto something here)
    Wolf`s Rain

Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto

Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex 2nd GIG
    Mezzo Forte
    Maria-sama ga Miteru

I think there are about 10 shows I dropped that I didn’t list.

  7. yea I watched a ton that I dropped as well (including Fate Stay Night lol) and didn’t list

  8. I think the reason I never saw Starship Operators was because I found out about it after it was licensed and therefore had trouble finding torrents.

  9. Oooh.. I didn’t realize that some of the anime I enjoyed were actually considered Winter anime. Here’s a list of the anime I actually watched and dropped after some episodes..

    2000:

    2003: na
    2004: marimita (GITS on hold)

    2006: FSN, Kashimashi
    2007: Manabi Straight, Hidamari
2008: True Tears, Okawari (Aria & Shigofumi on hold)

TT and Okawari are the only ones I watched while airing.

    nice compilation, jp.

  12. I feel so young, since I only really started focusing on Japan winter anime seasons in 2005. >_<

    2005:
    Air
    Jinki:Extend (meh)
    Xenosaga the Animation (bleh, sadly)
    Ultimate Girls (what omo said)

    2006:
Magikano (ending is lol just for viewer reactions)
    Fate…. /Stay Night
    Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl

    2007:
    Manabi Straight
    Hidamari Sketch
    Nodame Cantabile

    2008:
Persona: Trinity Soul (need to finish that)
    Hatenkou Yuugi (fun main trio)
Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (also need to finish)
    True Tears
Kimi ga Aruji de Shitsuji ga Ore de
    Shigofumi
    Minami-ke: Okawari
Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino (need to finish)
    Aria the Origination
    Spice and Wolf

So yeah… kinda overdid it this year. :P

  13. Alright, my list. I can’t remember what year I started, since 2003-2005 were so bad that I know I didn’t watch any of those shows as they aired.

    2006:
Fate/stay night (dropped maybe 1/4 way in)
Kashimashi: Girl meets Girl (2 or 3 eps)

    2007:
Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight! (1 ep)
    Hidamari Sketch (1 ep)
Nodame Cantabile (I watched this after the fact)
Getsumen To Heiki Mina (1 ep)

    2008:
Rosario + Vampire (for teh lulz)
H2O: Footprints in the Sand (for teh lulz)
    Persona: trinity soul (good)
    True Tears (1 ep)
Kimi ga Aruji de Shitsuji ga Ore de (for teh lulz)

  14. watching only the first ep doesn’t count.

  15. lol, leaving the list aside, i`ve just realized that besides the good stuff, i also watched a lot of crap…
    like… lets think like this:
be it like 2 crappy series per season at least, for 10 years:

19minutes for lets say, around 24(48) episodes per season(x2)
in one year its like 96 episodes, quite reasonable, if you mix the crap together right?
in a decade, it turns out more like 960 episodes of pure crapservice?

therefore: (19×960)x0.6/24= 12.6 days wasted haha XD
putting it like a reasonable math… like… a mmorpg player… in a healthy way wastes like what? 6 hours everyday right?
(if you`re old, 6 hours is a lot of time T_T)

so, its 304 hours, if you`re playing ragnarok online heheh its like 50 days wasted(just like you`re playing your first mmorpg and discovers that your build is crap XD)

oh well, i`m done for this life XD

  16. Hmmm. I started following seasons in 2002 so those I completed at the time:

2002:Onegai Teacher, FMP, Aquarian Age (mind-numbingly boring), RahXephon, Kanon

    2003:Wolf’s Rain, L/R (dreadful), MTnTnK

    2004:Marimite, Kita e, Mezzo Forte

    2005:Negima (sucked), Air, Jinki (yawn)

    2006:Kasimasi, Kage Kara Mamoru (ba-na-na)

2007:Manabi Straight (half of it was good), VVV (crap), Getsumen (waste of time), Hidamari Sketch

    2008:Zoku, true tears, Aria, Minami-ke:(Not)OK

and I watched Boogiepop a few years ago. 2002 was the best year I think, and the quality has pretty much fluctuated since. Uhhh, I guess I’ve wasted too much of my life watching rubbish so I’ll stick to the sequels for next season…

  17. I started watching anime (and became otaku) on the year 2008. Good thing I didnt feel how the past winter season anime sucked. XD

  18. mmm Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat…

    pa-pa-pa panyo panyo pa!

I dare people watch it and get brains mushed. >:D

  19. I watched it, it was so horrible I dropped it after like 15 eps

  20. I only started paying attention to anime seasons late 2004, I think, but even so I never really followed new animes on a weekly basis till 2007, when I started blogging.

So basically, my [not so impressive] list goes:

    2002
    Blaze of Mirage (lol)
    Full Metal Panic
    Onegai Teacher
Aquarian Age (stuck in the on-hold purgatory)

    2003
Wolf’s Rain (was too young to comprehend its depth)
Stratos 4 (went wtf halfway through)

    2005
    Magical Canan (dropped)
    Peach Girl (dropped)
Ultimate Girls (wtf – took me 2 eps to realize it was a total waste of time)

    2007
    Nodame Cantabile

    2008
    Persona:trinity soul (dropped)
    True Tears
    KimiAru (dropped)
