So the last few days both my readers and JP’s readers may have wondered why there weren’t any posts. Well in JP’s case they probably figured he was busy marathoning another terrible anime that I burned on CD 10 years ago, but in my case they might have been more concerned. Our host blew up, I think someone DDOSed (angry SC fans? lol) our entire server which made Bluehost cut us off completely. I mean they didn’t even give us access to our database.
We went looking for a new host and when we thought we found something, they had poor communication and almost no customer support and our blog had not returned for 3 days at this point – with no turnaround time in sight. I got really pissed (see fangirl rage) and I demanded we look for a new server and forget the asswipes who refused to properly transfer our blogs over. While looking for a new host, and taking dedicated hosting into consideration JP suggested that we should perhaps start fresh.

And let me tell you, this was some DDOS. The error log from that day was 1.1GB long, so even attempting to look at it crashed my computer. We tried to to find a new host, but eventually I saw that that was missing the point. While losing all those old posts is a bummer because of the hundreds of thousands of words in them, it’s also liberating because now you no longer have to deal idiots spamming your posts because you locked the Shugo Chara section because of trolls and mouth-breathers. Additionally, we were having huge bandwidth requirements, which I’m almost certain is due to tons of tons of spam robots constantly hammering the site. Our daily traffic had gone up about 50% since last year, but our bandwidth usage quadrupled to nearly 200GB per month. When your posts consist of 500 words and 1 picture, that traffic is clearly not from readers.
Then we thought about creating a pair of new blogs (possibly “Ex-Anime Blogger Hitorigoto” and “REBUILD of a fairy tale of love and courage”), but then we figured, eh why not make a joint blog? Our first guess was to call the site “Hazukashii Hitorigoto” for the alliteration, but then we realized that that sounds like a porn site.
So while it’s annoying that I can’t say any more “Just like how I said in this post” and whatnot, the massive headaches that hosting caused were creating way more stress that a hobby should provide. And besides, it’s not like everything is gone gone. Some posts are available through the Wayback Machine, and I did save a complete snapshot of the old site before pulling the plug.
Congrats on your new blog server…. and I believe I am the first visitor.. courtesy of Twitter..

I saw some stuff floating around Twitter about your problem today. Sorry I couldn’t help – I’ve been with the same host for years now (out of charity, I imagine) – but I’m glad to see that there’s been some resolution. I’m surprised they wouldn’t give you your database though…that seems like a quick way to ensure that their service never gets a decent review.

Caitlin> Yea it’s funny when I googled up “service cut off by Bluehost” i found multiple people with the same problem, who probably had like 20 visitors a day, which is not even close to what we got. It’s obviously not a problem with “us using too much b/w” it’s a problem that Bluehost is fulla shit.
Lelanglir> Most likely they probably are, but for old time’s sake you can always look @ web archives

Sorry to hear about the DDOS, but glad to see that you’re both back and posting – this probably sounds corny, but the anime blog world wouldn’t be the same without you.
